Societal Problems Facing Our Youths Today And Their Remedies

Our society is facing many challenges today, and the biggest victims are our youths. The future of any nation depends on its youths, but due to various societal problems, many young people are unable to unleash their potentials and fulfill their purpose.

In this article, we will discuss four major societal problems affecting our youths and five practical remedies to solve them.

Major Societal Problems Facing Our Youths are:

1. Lack of Seriousness from Parents

Due to lack of seriousness on the part of parents, many youths are unable to unleash their potentials. There is no child who can do well in life without parental care and guidance during the time of his growth.

Parents are the first teachers, the first mentors, and the first role models of every child. When parents fail to provide love, discipline, and proper guidance, the child grows up confused and vulnerable to negative influences.

The Holy Bible says it clearly in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." This training is not just about sending a child to school; it is about moral training, spiritual training, and character building at home. Many parents today are too busy chasing money and have left their children to be raised by housemaids, television, and the internet. This is a dangerous mistake that our society must correct.

2. Youth and Social Media Influences

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and others have been both the most destructive and the most constructive aspect of civilization in our present time. They have brought the world together, but many youths and even adults misuse them.

Instead of using social media to learn a skill, build a business, or connect positively, many youths use it to watch immoral content, compare their lives with fake lifestyles, and waste precious hours scrolling endlessly. This leads to depression, low self-esteem, laziness, and distraction from studies.

Youths need proper exposure and education on how to make good use of these social media mediums so that it can become an instrument of development in a growing community, not a tool of destruction.

As Erik Qualman rightly said, "We don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it." We must teach our youths how well to do social media.

3. Youths, Sex and Relationship Impairment

Due to lack of understanding of what sex and relationship truly mean, many youths have indulged themselves in the act of sexuality and in watching unreasonable photos like pornography on the internet. The influence and impact of this are wrongly misunderstood.

Many young people think that sex is love, and that having a boyfriend or girlfriend is a sign of maturity. They enter into relationships without knowing the essence or purpose of being in love. This has led to teenage pregnancies, broken hearts, sexually transmitted diseases, and emotional trauma that affects their future.

Our youths need to understand that relationship is about purpose, growth, and mutual respect, not just about sexual attraction. As Napoleon Hill said, "If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do." If a youth cannot control his thoughts, he will not be able to control his sexual desires. We must teach them self-control and emotional intelligence.

4. Youth and Their Vision Accomplishment

Every son and daughter born of a woman has something great and something special inside him or her. If this greatness is unveiled and nurtured with the love of the parents, it can bring great change and development to the society and to the nations at large.

Unfortunately, many youths do not know who they are. They do not know their talents, their calling, or their purpose. They go to school, graduate, and still have no vision for their lives. They are just existing, not living.

As Warren G. Bennis said, "Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." A youth without vision will remain a follower forever. We must help our youths discover their vision and give them the capacity to translate that vision into reality.

Five Suggested Remedies Explained in Detail

1. Hosting of Monthly / Quarterly Youth Seminars

One of the most powerful solutions to our youths' problems today is sensitization. We must solve youths' misconception of the world in different areas of life through education.

Organizing seminars has been a way many insightful leaders around the world use to control and shape their societies, because what goes around mostly in front of any youth is what his mind will comprehend and henceforth leads to the shaping of his mental picture.

The pictures they hold in their minds is what they grow up with. If a youth constantly sees crime, immorality, and laziness, that is what he will become. But if he constantly sees greatness, possibilities, and positive role models, he will aspire to be great.

So, there is a great need that our youths are exposed to different kinds of educative programs, not only the ones they gain at the university level. Community leaders, churches, schools, and NGOs should organize monthly or quarterly youth seminars on topics like career choice, talent discovery, social media management, sex education, and goal setting.

2. Understanding What It Means to Be a Parent

It involves many challenges to be a parent, and we must educate parents on these challenges.

First, the raising of children from childhood demands patience. A child will make mistakes, will be stubborn, and will test your patience. A parent must be patient enough to correct in love, not in anger.

Secondly, it involves controlling what is going on in children's lives until the age of maturity. This means monitoring their friends, what they watch on TV, what they do on their phones, and where they go after school. It is not about being too strict, but about being responsibly involved.

Third, parental advice must be backed by the example of the parent's own life. Children do not do what you say; they do what they see you do. If you want your child to be honest, you must be honest. If you want your child to read books, you must read books. Parenting is leadership by example.

3. How to Control Social Media Activities

It is the responsibility of parents to find a means of educating their children on social media activities, especially at their tender age. This can be done through words of encouragement, creating an award program that benefits youths who use social media positively, and supporting everything that brings enlightenment.

Parents should set rules. No phone at a certain time, no certain apps until a certain age, and always have open conversations about what they see online. Schools should also include social media literacy in their curriculum. Teach youths how to make money from social media, how to build a brand, and how to learn a skill online, instead of just using it for entertainment.

4. What to Know About Sex and Relationship

Sex is one of the reasons why so many youths go into relationships, without knowing the essence or the need of being sexually attracted to each other. Though it is love or lust, if I may say, that leads to sex, it is essential to know how to manage the forces of emotions so that it will not bring disappointment, disgrace, and shame to the people concerned and to their parents and society.

It is necessary that we must educate the youth on sex and marriage issues. It is through the help of their parents and trusted mentors that they are going to learn this truth. No one else except a sincere lover and responsible parent can tell the truth that a youth will understand and accept.

We must teach abstinence, self-control, and the purpose of waiting. Relationship should be about friendship, purpose, and preparation for a better future, not just about satisfying sexual urges.

5. Be Goal Oriented

Some of our youths don't know where to start in life. It is only after discovering who they are that the education they receive will be beneficial to them and to the community.

It is important to teach them how to set a goal and accomplish it no matter what that goal may be. The Bible says, "My people perish because of lack of knowledge." Help us accomplish this mission, oh parents and leaders!

There is no need to run away from our troubles. It is better to face our daily challenges that contribute to our growth in life than to leave everything to chance. Imagine your world. Visualization is everything as great men always believe. Try new things, set big goals, and work hard to achieve them.

When our youths are goal-oriented, our society will become development-oriented. Period.
