Have you ever heard these 3 words and wondered if they mean the same thing?
They almost have the same sounds in pronouciation thus; Artisan - Artist - Artiste. They sound alike. They are connected. But they are not the same.
Many people use them interchangeably and end up confusing themselves and others. Today, I'm going to break it down in the simplest way possible so you will never mix them up again in your daily usage.
In this article, I will elaborate the exact meaning of each word, the differences, examples, and how they fit in our talents.
THESE 3 WORDS CONFUSED MANY PEOPLE WITHOUT MERCY
English is a beautiful but very trickish as a language. Some words sound the same but have very different meanings especially when it comes to spellings and pronunciations.
Like these words; Artisan, Artist, and Artiste. All came from the root word "art". That is why people battle over their meanings. Art means, the expression of human creativity or skills based on human imagination and exhibition.
But once you understand the differences ,you will know exactly which title fits you, your talent, or your career pursuit. You become more clearer in what you are pursuing.
This is important for business owners, creatives, and anyone working to bring out his or her talents out because branding starts with using the right words on the right gift.

1. ARTISAN
This simply means the skilled craftsman with his hands and brain mostly based on knowledge acquired.
The word artisan is a noun. It refers to a person who is highly skilled at making things, mostly with his hands and brain that's simple.
If someone is called an artisan, it simply means the person is a craftsman or craftswoman. Full of creativity and making them real through exhibition.

1. Most Artisans are hand skilled people. Artisans work with their hands. You can think of a carpenter, welder, tailor, shoemaker, baker, plumber, or bricklayer.
2. In technical knowledge, many Artisans learn through training, apprenticeship, and practice or education. Their skills are mostly practicals.
3. When it comes to function and beauty, their works are usually useful. A chair, a shoe, a dress, or a house. But a good artisan also adds beauty and creativity to a thing through his power of imagination.
4. In terms of problem solving , an artisan uses both brain and hands to solve real-life problems. He make use of his right and left brain side.
For instance; A furniture maker who carves wood into chairs and tables, a fashion designer who cuts and sews clothes, a potter who moulds clay into plates and pots and a chef who creates meals.
The fact remains that, we are all born to be crafty in our own unique way. Every human being has the ability to learn a new skill and become an artisan in that area. We celebrate artisans because they are the ones building our world with their hands.
2. ARTIST
The word Artist simply means a creative imaginative person who creates art.
The word 'artist' is a noun. And it is totally different from an artisan.
An artist is a person who creates art. This art comes from the mind, imagination, and emotions basically believed to come from nature or from within soul.
Many Artist gain their energies through;
1. Mental Imagination. Artists use their right and left brain sides to make things real. They visualize things that don’t exist yet and bring it out on paper.
2. Another one is self-expression. Their work expresses feelings, ideas, and messages. It may or may not have a direct function but, it's meaningful.
3. They can create from within. Artists are great thinkers. They see the world differently and turn it into something new through their art of creativity.
4. Some artist use many mediums to express their feelings, like using paint, pencil, digital tools, clay, music, or even the human body for self expression.
Examples of Artists works are; a painter who draws landscapes and portraits, a sculptor who creates statues, a graphic designer who designs logos and posters, a makeup artist who beautifies a human face for an event and a photographer who captures emotion through pictures.
It is important we understand that one can be multi talented. And you can be a wood carver and still be an artist if your focus is on creating decorative art, not just functional furniture.
You can be a fashion designer and be an artist if your designs are more about creativity and expression than just clothing people.
The difference is in the purpose. Artisans focus on function. Artists focus on expression. Period.
To be complete, every creative person needs to keep learning. Don’t be weary of developing new skills. That is how you grow from good to great.

3. ARTISTE
The final word is Artiste. This is where most people get it confused.
According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, an artiste is a professional entertainer.
Some Artiste works are;
1. Performances: Every Artistes perform for a live audience. They sing, dance, act, or do comedy before the public. He commands attention from his fans.
2. Most Artistes aims at entertaining people on stage. Their main focus is to entertain, educate, or make people laugh.
3. Some public figure Artistes go live often on stage, Tv, radio, or social media platforms acting as social influencers.
It is a professional career most stars generated a lot of money from. Here are some examples of Artistes; he sings and perform mostly at a concert ground, some of them dance especially during shows or musical video shooting, while some act in movies or stage play as actors and a comedian doing stand-up comedy before the crowd is also an artiste. Even spoken word poet performing at an event are considered artiste.
HOW TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU ARE
Here are the three questions you need to ask yourself to know exactly where you belong to;
Do I create useful things with my hands?
Do I create art from my imagination and emotions?
Do I entertain people through music, dance, or acting?
Some people can be all. For example, a fashion designer can be an artisan because he sews, an artist can designs creatively because he can draw on papers, and an artiste can play and dance with words on stage while people watch him and get fun.
By knowing your primary identity helps you brand yourself better. It is called, discovering your purpose on earth. Many people failed at this because of misinterpretation of who they truly are.
