Six Practical Steps On How To Set A Goal And Achieve It Successfully
Goal setting has been a big and tough challenge to many unsuccessful people today. Even the so-called successful ones become hooked up when trying to set higher goals in order to meet up with their competitors.
Setting an achievable goal is one step, while achieving the set goal is the second and more difficult step. Many people know how to dream, but only a few know how to turn those dreams into reality.
This challenge has been in existence since the creation of man. Ever since man found himself in his environment, he has continued to search for a new and better way of accomplishing his heart desires through trial and error, and today through the invention of artificial intelligence and modern technology.
If you have been struggling to achieve your goals, you are not alone. The good news is that goal achievement is a skill that can be learned. These six steps of setting a goal and achieving it are practical and proven. If you follow them sincerely, they work like magic.
1. KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE
This is the first and most important action for anyone to take in order to start reaching a set goal in life. To achieve anything meaningful, you must truly know what you desire to be, to have, and to become in life before setting any goal.
Clarity is power. Many people fail because they are vague about what they want. They say, "I want to be rich or I want to be successful but they cannot define what riches means to them specifically. Do you want to be a great writer, a successful farmer, a business owner or a great teacher? It all in your power to achieve it. The great Bob Proctor said; "If you can see it in your head, you can have it in your hands."
You must be specific. Ask yourself: What exactly do I want? Why do I want it? What will my life look like when I achieve it? When you know what you want with clarity, your mind begins to create ways to achieve it. Without clarity, you will be running in circles. Take a quiet time, think deeply, and decide what you truly want to achieve in the next one year, five years, and ten years. Never relent.
2. WRITE IT DOWN
This is another powerful step to take in setting goals, but many people devalue it. Always write your goals down. Write whatever you wish to accomplish in life on a piece of paper or in a notebook. Having a written plan for your goal is essential in accomplishing a particular dream.
There is power in writing. When you write your goals down, you are moving them from your imagination to the physical world. Unwritten goals are just wishes. A written goal becomes a commitment.
Always occupy your mind with what you love to see as your goal. Even at night, make sure you have a blank book beside your bed to write any inspiring ideas or actions to take. Inspired actions that can fetch you millions or change your life can come at any time, even in the middle of the night. If you do not write them down, you will forget them.
Get a goal journal today. Write your goals in present tense, as if you have already achieved them. For example, write "I am a successful author" instead of "I will be a successful author." This programs your subconscious mind for success.
3. REVIEW YOUR WRITTEN DOWN STEPS
After knowing what to achieve and writing it down, it is your duty to review what you have written down as steps for achieving that goal. You must make changes where necessary towards accomplishing the goal.
Goal setting is not something you do once and forget. You must review your written goals daily, weekly, and monthly. Every morning, read your goals aloud. Every night, check what you did during the day to move closer to your goals.
During your review, ask yourself: What is working? What is not working? Do I need to change my strategy? Do I need to learn a new skill? Life changes, and sometimes your plans must change too. But your ultimate vision should remain constant. Reviewing helps you stay on track and avoid wasting time on activities that do not serve your purpose.
Many successful people spend 10 or 20 minutes every morning reviewing their goals. This habit alone can separate you from 90% of people who never achieve their dreams.
4. MAP OUT DATE AND TIME
Mapping out a specific date and time towards achieving your set goal is crucial. Date and time determine your progress and create urgency.
You should always watch the time you set for a particular goal and the time of achieving it. A goal without a deadline is just a dream. When you set a deadline, your mind becomes more focused and active. It stops procrastinating.
Master time management. Be conscious of how you consume your time. Wasting time without experiencing something new or doing something productive should never be tolerated. Time is your most valuable asset. You can lose money and get it back, but you can never get back lost time.
For each goal, set a start date and a finish date. Break your big goal into smaller tasks with their own deadlines. For example, if your goal is to write a book in six months, set a deadline to write one chapter every two weeks. This makes the big goal achievable and less overwhelming.
5. VISUALIZE EVENTS AND PEOPLE
The real secret lies in this fifth step. Form the habit of visualizing events before they happen. Visualizing events, people, and what to do before it comes always helps you prepare better.
The whole secret in reaching your goal is in visualizing actions to take before acting. It simply means seeing with your mind's eye. Most spiritual teachers call it the third eye or the power of imagination.
Before you go for an interview, visualize yourself succeeding. Before you launch your business, visualize your customers happy. Before you write an exam, visualize yourself writing confidently. When you visualize, your brain does not know the difference between imagination and reality. It begins to believe that your goal is possible and it starts to attract people, resources, and ideas to help you.
Spend at least five minutes every day in quiet visualization. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and see your goal as already achieved. See the people you will meet, the places you will go, and the joy you will feel. This practice builds confidence and removes fear.
6. BE ACTION AND RESULT ORIENTED
It is said that the end justifies the means. You must be a person of action despite the rough roads in all life situations. You should concentrate mostly on what you want to achieve. Again, focus your attention on the end result.
Nothing works until you work. You can know what you want, write it down, review it, set a date, and visualize it, but if you do not take action, nothing will happen. Action is the bridge between dreams and reality.
Action, preparation, and persistence are the only ways to attain your goals. Success is when preparation meets opportunity. There will be obstacles, there will be failures, but you must keep moving forward. As it is written in the book "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne, "What you focus your attention on expands." If you focus on problems, you will see more problems. If you focus on results and solutions, you will see more opportunities.
Be result-oriented. At the end of each day, ask yourself, "What result did I produce today that moved me closer to my goal?" If the answer is nothing, then you must adjust your actions tomorrow.
