9 POWERS OF LEADERSHIP SPIRIT
BY REV. DR. OKECHUKWU ONYEMAECHI
The Nine powerful statements I grabbed as Rev. Dr. Okey Onyemaechi was delivery his speech at Akpukpa Youths Conference Seminar as of 14th of April, 2022.
These are what he said:
1. “YOU CANNOT GROW MORE THAN YOUR PLACE.”
As he walked inside the hall, he saw how little children are all over the hall with few adults. These children are not up to 18 years of age. The few adults he saw were ready to learn from him.
Observing this, he said, well you cannot grow more than your place. He knew that bye and bye, his place is his home. He cannot because of his high profile or personality differences or money and reject his people’s call to learn from his knowledge. His actions and words changed something in me.
2. “AM A CYCLOPEDIA THE MORE YOU WANT TO KNOW ME THE DEEPER I BECOME.”
He said this because he has seen the community, the people and their old ways of reasoning. He decided to live like them not because he is of the same level of thinking but because he wants to make an impact. As he said, if you try to show me over sense, I will tell you that am more than what you think of me.
3. “YOU MUST HAVE THIS - CONTROLLING YOUR TEMPERAMENT.”
Here, he’s telling the leaders of our communities. If you must be effective leader, you must learn how to control your temperament. He knows how important it is to have an organized life style and packages as a leader. He knew that leaders of today allow themselves up to be beaten by societal influences of people who are not leaders. He knew that leaders are selected people who are always looked upon by their followers. He knew that leaders are the first citizens of any community and state. He understands the challenges leaders face.
That’s why he gave out the most secret- knowing how to control your temperament. The word ‘temperament’ has been missing in people’s lives especially leaders. Many don’t know what temperament is all about talk more of knowing how to control it. If there’s one lesson a person should learn before going into leadership I think its temperament.
4. “A LEADER MUST BE READY TO FIGHT OPPOSITION.”
This is what most leaders and ordinary people don’t know. As a leader, you must in actions show annoying reactions to those who want you to fail. To those who want to make you a fool before your followers. He said, you must be ready to fight them. It’s simply means leaders should physically build their muscles to become giants and be somehow fearful may looking at them. He is saying leaders should study spiritual books or verses of the bible that empowers them mentally so that they can fight those with bending spiritual insight. Or maybe, leaders should strive to be more enlighten to rise above their oppositions.
5. “A LEADER IS A PERSON WHO IS CONCERNED WITH THE PEOPLE HE’S LEADING.”
Revered Pastor Okey Onyemaechi knew that leaders are entitled or entrusted with few or many groups of people in a country or growing communities whose followers are looking up to their leaders for guidance and corrections.

He believed that leaders are not just only the people who are selected to lead others but leaders are people whether called upon or not who volunteered to be concerned with the people they are leading. The speaker may not have viewed it this way but in my mental eye seeing – it does mean another thing. For me, Onyemaechi’s speech expands my insight of seeing from different viewpoints. You must be concerned with the people’s feelings if you think you are their leader. True leaders must be concerned with the societal challenges of their people.
5. “IF YOU ARE A LEADER AND YOU THINK THE PROBLEM OF THE PEOPLE DOESN’T CONCERN YOU, ONE DAY IT WILL CONCERN YOU.”
He used road as an instance, if you are watching your people suffering from bad roads and you feel like it doesn’t concern you because home is not your base, you only come down home when you know surely its good and dry. One day, it could be death or wedding of your dear ones only then because of your friends would be a touch on your checks. Frankly speaking, leaders should try their best to show concern with their people’s problems.
7. “THE RIGHT PEOPLE AT THE RIGHT TIME - THAT WHAT LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT.”
He says this because he discovered that some leaders don’t care to cooperate with the right people that would make things happen. He suggests that leaders should look for the right people who would give them what they want. What could stop the vision of the leader not to manifest? This is a real fact, finding right people who can give you what you want at the right time.
8. “THERE ARE PEOPLE YOU MUST TRUST. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WILL MENTOR YOU OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED AS A LEADER”.
He said, even as am speaking with you now – I have many mentors who I go to and they will sit me down and discuss things out. As visionary leaders, do you have wise men as your mentors? He knew too well that leaders of today may have mentors but hardly will they listen to the directions of their mentors rather they go ahead in doing their heart desires. Or maybe, they chose the wrong type to mentor them. Leaders should share their visions with their mentors and listen for directions.
9. “IF YOU DON’T HAVE A MENTOR, THE PERSON IS BASTARD.”
Indirectly he has called all the leaders who don’t have mentors bastard. He is suggesting that every leader should have another eye that sees from different directions and different perspective of things. He is also suggesting that as a leader if you choose unenlightened men as mentors you too is a bastard.
His last point I think is annoying because from the phase of his speech, it means anybody on the face of the universe who don’t have a mentor is bastard. You are not truly what others say you are. You are who you chose to be. You are a unique born hero.
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” – Isaac Newton
